Dance school, Les Pieds dans la Mare!

Dance school, Les Pieds dans la Mare!

Presentation

Established in 2016, "Les Pieds Dans La Mare" is a metaphor for Jenny to say, "Indeed, my feet are in the pond now, but soon they will be on the red carpet!" It is the first art school accessible to all (self-taught, illiterate, physically disabled, etc.). It welcomes young people from sensitive neighborhoods who wish to leave delinquency behind through dance practice and related professions. The school's priority was to position itself in a sensitive area devoid of sports halls, gymnasiums, cinemas, or theaters... It advocates for a playful pedagogical practice that makes access to professional artistic languages easy. Here we change the codes, we dream, we break the spirit of misery, of disease that some convey about African society. We sing, dance, transform ourselves, play music, and with these divine flavors, we build our future with dignity.

Context and Mission

The founder of the school, Jenny Mezile, is convinced that the practice of dance, art, and sports serves as a vector for career change in active life. The school presents itself as an alternative, a glimmer of hope for these populations insofar as it can meet their needs. The school accepts all ethnicities, African or foreign races, and LGBT individuals are a priority of the school, where they are welcomed like everyone else.

  • "Life hangs by a thread, you have to enjoy it"

    • How is your life ten months after the attack?
    • Do you talk to a doctor, a psychologist about it?
    • What helps you through all this, what keeps you going?
    • How do you experience those moments?
My Life in Pink
  • This show is Jenny Mezile's latest creation. This show talks about the loss of loved ones inspired by the Haitian earthquake that killed more than 200,000 people in 2010. Here, derision is at its peak around eclectic characters. From the dandy to the Zaoulie mask, from the zebra to the nun to the transvestite, everyone crosses paths from one tableau to another in a true musical mixing of Tchaikovsky, Freddy Mercury, coupé-décalé, etc. Everything is there to forget this catastrophe which the choreographer wanted to ridicule to forget and remember.
Negro Cabaret
  • "The House of Fetishes" is a cabaret show dealing with homophobia and tolerance. Creation 2019/2020 in progress. Excerpt presented at the Goethe Institute in Abidjan last April.
